Another version of this legend is that an Indian fisherman found a box containing the image of the Virgin Mary and the Spanish colonial church named Nuestra Senora de la Limpia Concepcion was thus built around that image as it could not be moved elsewhere. Initially a hermitage made of straw was built between 1575 and 1580 and indigenous people called the image of the Virgin Mary “The Queen of the Valleys”. Over the years the image attained fame due to many miracles that it is said to have performed for the villagers.

It is also said that when the English pirate Henry Morgan attacked the village in 1666, the Virgin Mary came to their rescue to fight off the attack.

Costa Rica stands out because of its biodiversity, and in the area of orchids the country has more species than Mexico, the United States and Canada combined. Thanks to this, the Lankester Botanical Garden houses over twenty-thousand different orchids in its greenhouses. “The University of Costa Rica displays for study, in one place, about 80% of the orchid biodiversity in the country,” says Jorge Wagner, researcher at the Lankester Botanical Garden.

The facilities also include a splendid Japanese garden that was built using traditional Japanese materials such as stone, clay, bamboo and wood. Visitors can enjoy waterfalls, ponds, bridges and a typical Japanese homes. The Lankester Botanical Garden also has several plant collections and trails for visitors to enjoy the beauty of nature.

Lankester Botanical Garden, one of the world’s most renowned botanical orchid gardens, is home to more than 3000 plant species.

Wear clothes that can get wet : A bathing suit and short pants would be ideal. You will be provided with a life jacket. Also wear waterproof shoes! Bring your waterproof Camera or GoPro: Attach it to your helmet for some great action shots.

Depending on when you visit, the rapids can range from moderately difficult to the extreme. In fact, the 16-mile “upper” stretch – the section most commonly rafted – is known for its steady Class II to IV rapids. More expert rafters may prefer the more technically demanding 10-mile upper stretch. Safety is critical in any river rafting tour, and reputable tour companies only use seasoned river guides. Keep in mind that the river levels may be higher than usual during the peak rainy season months (September and October).

Rest assured, you don’t need to be a pro to enjoy the fun of rafting on the Pacuare. Expert river guides have been leading trips for nearly two decades. This ensures guests receive proper instruction, safety gear and are fully prepared for the adventure of a lifetime. Most trips last anywhere from five to seven hours, and rafters are encouraged to wear their swimsuits and quick-dry clothing. And most tour operators provide their professional photographer, who will take plenty of action-packed photos that make excellent souvenirs.

Queveri Horseback Riding tours is a great outdoor activity in the Orosi highlands at Finca Agropecuaria Queveri. It consists of riding to the paddocks of the farm, and herding the cattle (with the support of Queveri staff) all the way to the old dairy. Enjoy the views and learn about the importance of the place. The tour is completed with a visit to the viewpoint, where you can see the volcanic mountain range of Costa Rica (Poás Volcano, Barva Volcano, Irazú Volcano, and Turrialba Volcano) and Tapanti National Park. From this viewpoint, you can visit the Piedras del Alto.
