OROSI LODGE

Our Location

In the midst of a peaceful, green mountainous landscape lies the small village of Orosi, whose excellent coffee is by far not the only reason why a stay in this beautiful valley should not be missed on any trip to Costa Rica.

This charming area invites you to explore amazing places.

Orosi is located in a valley, south of the Cachí dam. Here you can find the oldest church of Costa Rica which was built in 1743 by the Spanish conquerors. There is a small museum for sacred art attached to it.

The coffee that is grown here on the mountain slopes is world famous.

There are hot thermo-mineral springs in the area which are great for relaxing. The Tapantí National Park, the Irazú and Turrialba volcanoes, the Lankester Botanical Gardens, the church ruins of Ujarrás and the archaeological site of Guayabo are also within easy reach.

With rainforest, volcanoes, coffee and sugar cane plantations, the Orosi region offers one of the most beautiful and varied landscapes found in Costa Rica.

Although this stretch of land was the first to be settled in Costa Rica, it was one of the last to be developed by tourism, which makes it even more interesting as a tourist destination.

Mineral Hot Springs and their benefits

The pools have a continuous flow of mineral hot spring water, which should not be confused with volcanic hot spring water. The water from the mineral hot springs originates from tectonic plate fractures, which heat up the filtered water. The violent increase in temperature drives the water to emerge out the surface in the middle of the rainforest at a temperature of 74℃. (Hypothermal)

According to the World Health Organization, the water is naturally rich in minerals and salt ions that rejuvenate skin tissue, stimulate the senses and increase well being.

Calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, aluminum, sulfate, and zinc are some of the minerals.

Ruins of Ujarras

UUjarrás are the ruins of one of the oldest churches in Costa Rica, Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Limpia Concepción, which was built in the 1580s during early colonial times.Local legend has it that a painting of the Virgin was found in a box by native Huetar Indian fishermen who brought it to the village, and a church was thus built on this site by the locals to commemorate the Virgin. Another version of this  legend is that an Indian fisherman found a box containing the image of the Virgin Mary and the Spanish colonial church named Nuestra Senora de la Limpia Concepcion was thus built around that image as it could not be moved elsewhere. Initially a hermitage made of straw was built between 1575 and 1580 and indigenous people called the image of the Virgin Mary “The Queen of the Valleys”. Over the years the image attained fame due to many miracles that it is said to have performed for the villagers.

It is also said that when the English pirate Henry Morgan attacked the village in 1666, the Virgin Mary came to their rescue to fight off the attack.

Irazu Volcano

I

The Irazú Volcano (Spanish: Volcán Irazú) is an active volcano in Costa Rica, situated in the Cordillera Central close to the city of Cartago.

The name comes from either the combination of “ara” (point) and “tzu” (thunder) or a corruption of Iztarú, which was the name of an indigenous village on the flanks of the volcano. In Costa Rica it is known by the name of “El Coloso” (The Colossus) because of the many disasters it has caused.

The volcano’s summit has several craters, one of which contains Diego de la Haya, a crater lake of variable depth.

At 11,260 feet (3,432 m), the Irazú Volcano is the highest active volcano in Costa Rica.
